The name Ireland derives from the name É(in modern, Éire) with the addition of the word land. Most other western European names for Ireland derive from the same source, such as Irlande, and PIrlanda, Irland and Ierland. The capital, Dublin, offers one of the greatest city-breaks in Europe, with a lively cosmopolitan feel and atmosphere.
The island of Ireland has an extensive road network, with a motorway network fanning out from Cork and Dublin. Dublin is a great place to start a driving holiday and offers the opportunity to get away from a visit many interesting places. Motorists must drive on the left in Ireland.
There are four main international airports in Ireland: Dublin airport , Cork Airport, Shannon Airport and Knock Airport. Dublin Airport is the busiest airport in Ireland, carrying over 22 million passengers per year.
