Kalamaja is a sub district of the district of Põhja-Tallinn (Northern Tallinn) in Tallinn, the capital of Estonia. The town was the location of the oldest cemetery in Tallinn, known as Kalamaja cemetery which was founded in the 15th or 16th century. The cemetery was flattened in 1964, during the second occupation of the Baltic States, by Russian Soviet authorities who used the area of Kalamaja as a base for the Soviet Armed Forces. Kalamaja is in Tallinn and Tallinn Airport serves Kalamaja. Flights come into Tallinn Airport from many European cities including London-Stansted, Vienna and Barcelona. Once you have arrived at the airport the easiest option is to rent a car and drive to Kalamaja, the journey is very easy and will only take toy a short amount of time but having the car means that you can visit Kalamaja and the surrounding area with ease. The Kalamaja cemetery is one of the sites to visit in Kalamaja. It was once the city's oldest existing cemetery. It contained thousands of graves of ethnic Estonian and Swedish residents of Tallinn and stood for at least 400 years, from the 15th or 16th century to 1964 when it was completely flattened and destroyed by the Soviet occupation authorities governing the country at that time. Now the area is a public park, the only sign that it was a cemetery is a small plaque with a very short description has been put on the site on the side of a restored chapel. You can also get in your hire car and visit other attractions in Tallinn, for example the zoo, the open air museum or the botanical gardens.
