Samokov is a town in the Sofia Province in the southwest of Bulgaria. It is situated between the mountains Rila and Vitosha. Just 9km Borovets, Samokov is a suitable area to visit for winter sports. Samokov is situated 65km from the Bulgarian capital, Sofia and Sofia International airport serves Samokov. You can fly into Sofia from many cities in Europe including Athens, Larnaca, Vienna and Frankfurt.
Once you have arrived in Sofia the easiest way to get to Samokov is to rent a car and drive. Driving from the airport to the destination is easy and takes just over an hour. The town was founded by Romans, as a mining center and iron trade. Samokov founded the first and biggest art school in Bulgaria. The famous Bulgarian artist Christo Dimitrov, his sons Dimitar and Zahari Zograf, Ivan and Nikola Obrazopisovi all lived in the town.
Bulgaria’s largest river, The Iskar River, runs through Samokov which is one of the reasons to visit the town along with some of the famous landmarks. These landmarks include The Assumption and St. Nikola churches, the historical museum and Madden Monastery. It is also the town that produces the most potatoes in Bulgaria.
The main reason to visit Samokov is for a ski holiday. The town is a ski and spa resort. It is very close to Borovets which is one of the main ski resorts in Bulgaria and offers cheap accommodation many people stay in Samokov and travel to Borovets to ski.
