Reggio Calabria or Reggio is a historic city in southern Italy, the capital of the Province of Reggio Calabria as well as the largest and oldest city in the Calabria region. Reggio Calabria has its own airport but it is very small and flights are not very regular. The closest major international airport is Catania-Fontanarossa Airport and you can reach the airport from many European cities including London-Gatwick, Hamburg, and Madrid. Once you have arrived at the airport the easiest option is to rent a car and drive to Reggio Calabria, the journey is approximately 90km. The town of Reggio Calabria enjoys an exceptionally mild climate all the year round and, for this reason it is a popular seaside resort. Further than its wonderful beaches, Reggio Calabria also offers many places to visit and attractions. You shouldn't miss the chance to admire the fantastic collection of Greek and Roman sculptures and artefacts in the museum. Among the exhibits are the famous Riace bronzes, two Greek statues recovered from the seabed. In September there is the festival of the Madonna della Consolazione in Reggio Calabria, in which an effigy of the Virgin is carried shoulder-high in a procession through the streets of the town. There are many hotels in Reggio Calabria from 5 stars to bed and breakfast to student digs, so whatever your taste or budget you will never be short of a place to stay.
