Riga is the capital of Latvia; the city is situated on the Baltic Sea coast on the mouth of the river Daugava. Riga is the largest city in the Baltic States. The Historic Centre of Riga has been declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and the city is particularly notable for its extensive Art Nouveau architecture, which UNESCO considers to be unparalleled anywhere in the world. Riga has its own airport, it is 13km southwest of the actual city and it is the largest airport in the Baltic States. The airport is directly connected to over 60 destinations in 30 countries including London-Stansted, Oslo and Amsterdam. Once you have arrived at the airport the easiest option is to rent a car and drive into Riga, this won’t take any time at all and it will give you the convenience of having a car for your holiday. One of the great things to visit in Riga is The Rîga Circle of Boulevards. The 15-minute trip along Rîga’s “circle of boulevards” will offer a look at some of the great symbols of architecture and culture in Rîga – the Latvian National Opera, the Freedom Monument, the Latvian National Theatre, and other important and distinguished structures. At the final destination of the route in Ausekïa Street, you may want to walk through the “Art Nouveau” neighbourhood of Elizabetes, Alberta and other nearby streets. The “Pearls of Rîga Art Nouveau” tourist guide will be of good use there. Every Friday, Saturday and Sunday at 11.40AM, 1.40PM, 3,40PM you are welcome to take a free guided walking tour of the “Art Nouveau neighbourhood.” If you jump into your hire car you can visit the Meþaparks, the neighbourhood of beautiful private homes designed largely in accordance with the aesthetics of Art Nouveau. On your visit you can also visit Rîga Zoo, a great treat for the children. Riga is the city that never sleeps, and this statement is especially true in the summer, when the sun so briefly sets. Riga nightlife starts around 8-9 PM when people begin to gather in restaurants and cocktail bars. Night-clubs open around 10-11 pm and then after midnight the real party starts!
