Pilsen or Plzen is a city in western Bohemia in the Czech Republic. It is the capital of the Plzeò Region and the fourth most populous city in the Czech Republic. It is located about 90 km west of Prague at the confluence of four rivers which form the Berounka River. The city is known world wide for the Pilsener beer. Pilsen is approximately 90km from Prague and Prague Airport serves Pilsen. Flights come into Prague Airport from many European cities including, London-Heathrow, Madrid and Vienna. Once you have arrived at the airport the easiest option is to rent a car and drive to Pilsen, the journey is very easy as Pilsen is very accessible by the D5 motorway and the journey will take you just over an hour. The city centre with its many historical landmarks has been declared a protected historic area. Many of the buildings rank among true gems of architecture, namely the Cathedral of St. Bartholomew (a listed building) and the Renaissance City Hall both great landmarks to visit. Favourite tourist destinations include, apart from the world renowned Pilsner Urquell brewery, also the Zoo and Botanical Gardens and the adjacent DinoPark. The J.K. Tyl Theatre as well as the Alfa Theatre feature prominently among the highlights of Pilsen cultural life, together with about twenty galleries and various multigenre and alternative cultural projects, so there is plenty to keep you entertained duing the day for both adults and children alike. Pilsen is the home of pilsner beer and, as we know it today, Pilsener Urquell. The Plzen Brewery Museum is located in a 15th century malthouse. Visitors can trace beer's history from Mesopotamia and discover how beer was produced, stored, and transported in Plzen specifically. During the tour of Pilsner Urquell Brewery visitors will be invited to watch a short film on beer making, tour the brew house, the "hall of fame," beer cellars, and coopers' workshop. Beer tasting follows the tour. Also on the premises is a souvenir shop and a restaurant serving typical Czech cuisine.
