Split is the largest and most important Dalmatian city, the second-largest urban center in Croatia, and the seat of Split-Dalmatia County. The city is situated on the shores of the Mediterranean, more specifically the eastern Adriatic Sea, spreading over a central peninsula. Split has a large metropolitan area and also many littoral towns as well. An important regional transit center, the city is a vital link to the numerous surrounding Adriatic islands and the Italian peninsula, as well as a popular tourist destination. Split has its own airport which makes it very easy to reach. Flights come into the airport from many European cities including, London-Gatwick, Amsterdam and Berlin. The most important sight in Split to see is Diocletian's palace. Do not miss the Peristyle which is the main open space in the palace and is surrounded by a colonnade of six columns to the eastern and western sides and an arch, decorated with garlands, in the centre. On the eastern side of the Peristyle is a cathedral. On the western side is what they call the "People's Square" with the old town hall which was built in the 15th century.
